The tax policies of the various political parties have been hitting the headlines

At one end of the spectrum, the Greens and Te Pāti Māori are proposing a radical overhaul of the tax system with increases in marginal tax rates and the introduction of a wealth tax. Labour has ruled out capital gains and wealth taxes, but official information releases indicate that it had officials considering such proposals for Budget 2023 before shelving them.

At the other end of the spectrum political parties are promising tax cuts - National through inflation adjusting tax brackets and Act by cutting the existing five tax rates down to two. GST may also be in for some radical change with Te Pāti Māori wanting to remove GST from food and Labour proposing its removal from fresh fruit and vegetables. Both National and Labour are planning to remove depreciation from commercial buildings.
